Milla Jovovich Will Star in the Final George A. Romero Zombie Film, Twilight of the Dead

George A. Romero was working on what would’ve been his final zombie movie ever when he passed away in 2017 and now, after years of teases, it’s finally happening. Romero’s estate has teamed with the production company Roundtable to bring the film, called Twilight of the Dead, to life. And while the company had already hired Brad Anderson (Session 9) to direct, they’ve now added Milla Jovovich (The Fifth Element) and Betty Gabriel (Get Out) to star.

“We’re thrilled to share Milla Jovovich’s return to the zombie genre in this fresh and original way with Twilight of the Dead,” Roundtable’s Sarah Donnelly told Deadline. “With Brad’s masterful, visionary direction and Milla’s unique ability to command the screen as a bona fide action star with emotional depth and resiliency, there’s no doubt this film will be a riveting, compelling standout in the genre.”

Twilight will be the seventh film in the Romero saga, which started with 1968’s landmark Night of the Living Dead and continued in 1978’s Dawn of the Dead, 1985’s Day of the Dead, 2005’s Land of the Dead, 2007’s Diary of the Dead, and 2009’s Survival of the Dead. This time, the film will take place on a tropical island and “delve into the dark nature of humanity from the perspective of the last humans on earth who are caught between factions of the undead,” according to Deadline.

“I see this film in the same way as successful post-apocalyptic thrillers such as I Am Legend, A Quiet PlaceThe Road, and The Last of Us—genre stories that are as emotional as they are intense,” Anderson said. “When I first read Twilight of The Dead I teared up at the end. Which is weird for a film of this type. But it has that kind of pull, that combo of horror and heartbreak that I love.”

No word on who Jovovich or Gabriel are playing, or when the film will come out, but it’ll shoot in 2025.
