A Game of Thrones Movie Is Apparently on the Table

Game of Thrones aired its last episode in 2019, but the world created by George R.R. Martin still has a major pop culture presence. HBO’s prequel series House of the Dragon has been a big hit, with a third season currently in the works—and spinoff A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, based on Martin’s “Dunk and Egg” stories, will debut in 2025. Plus, there are always rumors of more Thrones-adjacent series to come; someday we may even get The Winds of Winter, Martin’s long-awaited next book in his series. But how about this curveball: a Game of Thrones feature film?

According to the Hollywood Reporter, there’s a chance it could indeed happen. The trade writes, “Warner Bros. has been quietly developing at least one film set in George R.R. Martin’s epic fantasy universe … Multiple sources describe the project as very early stage development, with no filmmaker, cast, or writer yet attached. But the company is keen on exploring the idea of Westeros invading cinemas.” io9 has reached out to HBO/Warner Bros. and will update this post should we hear back.

THR goes on to point out this move would make sense in the context of the studio, which oversees HBO, taking a new point of view regarding the flow between its big and small-screen content. The Batman spawned current HBO and Max hit The Penguin; Dune: Prophecy, which arrives on the streamer in November, is a prequel to the Denis Villeneuve Dune films.

And specifically in the fantasy realm, Warner Bros. has multiple Lord of the Rings projects in the works; due to the complicated rights attached to J.R.R. Tolkien’s creation, the TV series is over on Amazon Prime Video, but Middle-earth on the big screen is still WB’s domain. It makes sense that the studio would want to build upon the genre by tapping deeper into Game of Thrones, another property with a huge built-in fan base.

Also: imagine the dragon egg-shaped popcorn buckets!

While of course there are zero details beyond the fact that a Game of Thrones movie could potentially happen, it’s still exciting to think about. If it does come together, which era and corner of Westeros do you think a feature film should focus on?
