Leaks can be fun. They hint at what’s coming down the pipeline and offer a perspective about where the rest of the industry is leaning next. We already have foldables galore, though they’re all quite pricey—most rank at over $1,000, which isn’t affordable without a trade-in scheme. Motorola, which already figured out how to get the folding phone down to $700, might be cooking up an answer to this the best way it knows how: packing in a cheaper processor in the same folding chassis.
The Motorola Razr 50s, the successor to the Razr 50, has been making the rumor rounds. On X, formerly and fondly remembered as Twitter, OnLeaks, a trusted smartphone leaker we’ve cited before, published purported specifications and press images of Motorola’s cheaper folding phone. The Razr 50s is still a 6.9-pOLED device inside, like its predecessors. But instead of a Qualcomm-made Snapdragon processor, there’s a MediaTek Dimensity 7300/7300X, a chip often reserved for the affordable fleet overseas. Namely, Chinese brands like RealMe and Oppo use the chip in sub-$300 devices sold overseas. Preliminary benchmark scores via GeekBench 6 show the Motorola Razr 50s MediaTek chip clocking in alongside the Razr 50’s Snapdragon 7 Gen 1.
Other supposed specifications for the Razr 50s include 8GB of memory, up to 256GB of storage, and a 3,800mAh battery, the same as the previous two Razr 50 models. There’s a 3.6-inch pOLED cover screen on the front, just like the regular Razr 50, plus a 50-MP dual camera system and a 32-MP selfie camera. It will ship with Android 14. It’s not the most featured loaded folding phone, like what you’d get from Samsung’s realm or even the Razr that launched earlier this year, but the basics are all there for using a smartphone and moving through the world without spending a ton.
Motorola has made its fortune on repackaging its stellar smartphone bodies with cheaper components to bring down the overall cost of the device. It’s how it sold some of the best phones with the longest battery life, as long as you didn’t mind skimping on features like photography and graphics processing. The G series are some of its best-selling products and have helped the company hold on to its global market share throughout the tumultuous smartphone wars. It’ll be interesting to see if it can do the same to foldable that it did for mid- to low-end devices worldwide.
OnLeaks tells us Motorola will debut the folding Razr 50s at the end of the month. However, it’s likely to launch overseas only. Don’t expect to buy this phone in the U.S. any time soon. But look forward to a future where folding flip phones are the norm at prices that won’t make your eyes pop out of your head.
