Netflix’s New App Lets You Use The Smartphone To Play Games On The TV

Netflix has silently launched an iOS app named “Game Controller,” indicating a forthcoming expansion of its gaming offerings; This app is poised to enable subscribers to play games on their TV screens. While Netflix has previously offered a curated selection of mobile games, it hadn’t delved into games playable on living room TVs.

The app instructs users to choose a game on their TV and follow the connection directions, although this functionality is not yet supported on smart TVs, game consoles, or streaming boxes. Despite this, Netflix’s intentions to bridge this gap are evident. Initially available on iOS, an Android release is plausible.

Although Netflix hasn’t officially announced the app, key members of the company’s leadership have hinted at this expansion. Netflix’s VP of Gaming, Mike Verdu, mentioned their exploration of cloud gaming, highlighting its unique business model compared to past attempts like OnLive or Stadia.

Access to Netflix’s games is included in standard TV streaming subscriptions — Subscribers can download games from app stores and log in with Netflix credentials to play. Netflix Games has generated considerable attention, potentially surpassing Apple’s Arcade subscription.

Another Netflix executive, Leanne Loombe, confirmed the company’s exploration of cloud streaming and the goal to enable gaming across various devices. Netflix’s move signifies a strategic shift towards an enhanced entertainment landscape.
